Board of Directors Meeting, July 16, 2016
Present: Chet Gardiner, Cea Smith, Armando Rodriguez, Bruce Corker, Suzanne Shriner, Chris Coleman, Sandra Scarr (by phone)
Call to order: 3:10 pm
Consent Agenda: With deferral of approval of the June minutes until the August meeting; and with clarification that the August 13 Non-Profit Board workshop is still tentative and that KCFA members will be invited to attend as observers if the workshop is held: M/S/C to approve.
Treasurer’s Report: M/S/C to approve. Proposed budget will be considered at the August meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
HDOA Green Coffee Grade Standards Revisions: In connection with last year's the 3-year extension of the current green coffee grade standards through July 1, 2020, the HDOA committed to consider input from coffee organizations for long-term revisions to the standards—including changes to BEAN SIZE, DEFECT COUNT, ORIGINS, REDUCTION OF # OF GRADES, COLOR REQUIREMENTS, ROASTING/CUPPING FOR CERTIFICATION, NATURALS. However, HDOA has held no meetings for coffee organizations’ input since September 2016. Suzanne Shriner will inquire to the HDOA as to status.
OLD BUSINESS
Made in Hawaii Show: Kay Dixon is coordinating this event, but was traveling and not at the meeting. She will send an update via email. The event is in Honolulu on August 18, 19, and 20.
HCA Green Coffee Auction: Mark Dubay, who was the liaison to the HCA on this, has resigned from the KCFA Board. Armando Rodriguez will take over coordination.
HDOA PQ Quarantine Waiver Update [Kona Hills]: Discussion of the status of Kona Hills’ stated intention to bring 1.5 million non-Arabica Typica seeds for planting in Kona—and options for publicizing the effects this would have for the heritage Kona flavor profile. Discussion of display of banners with slogans such as “Keep Kona Coffee LOCAL, not CORPORATE”.
Agricultural Issues Candidate Forum: Thursday, August 2, 6-8 pm, Konawaena High School Cafeteria for West Hawaii candidates for State Senate and House. Co-sponsored by KCFA and the Hawaii Farmers Union United.
