Committee Reports
President’s Report
-Sent letter to Gov Ige and Mayor Kim, congratulating them on joining Paris Accord
-Sent Testimony to US EPA requesting deregulation of Beauveria Bassiana for farm use.
-Sent support letter to Homeland Security in regards to Andres Magana immigration status.
-Met with Sen. Hirono staffer to discuss labor, counterfeiting, Farm Bill and other issues impacting Kona Farmers.
Science Committee
Meeting June 5: Present – Sandra, Bob, Melanie, Suzanne, and Mike.
Chair thanked Bob for article in Newsletter on chemistry of roasted coffee. The committee members committed to providing one article a month to Newsletter on science topic of interest to members.
Climate change – Committee agreed to send letter on behalf of KCFA to Governor Ige thanking him for his recent actions in joining United States Climate Alliance and signing law committing the state to meet Paris Accord targets.
Committee also authorized Chair to investigate “ally” status with 350Hawaii.
Coffee standards. Committee discussed current HDOA green coffee standards and comparison to Jamaica Blue Mountain and SCAA standards. There was a general consensus to remove size as a determinate and concentrate on defects. There was movement to go to SCAA defect standards but rename them to Hawaii legacy class names: Extra Fancy = SCAA Specialty, 5 full defects/300g; Fancy = SCAA Premium, 8 full defects/300g; Select = SCAA Exchange, 23 full defects/300g, Prime = SCAA below grade, 86 full defects/300g. These four grades would all carry the Kona designation. Off grade = SCAA off grade, >84 full defects/300g. Off grade cannot be called Kona. Going to this system would remove size from standards and reduce total number of grades from 7 to 5. Discussion of standards and related issues will continue next month.
Budget: Suzanne indicated that $6400 would be returning to KCFA from HDOA grant. Draft budget developed and sent to treasurer as outlined in separate email to all board members.
Tech Committee Report for April 17, 2017 KCFA Board Meeting
Chet Gardiner and I met to work on the 2017/2018 FY Budget. Decided on 4000$. Broken down as follows
1) Fixed web maintenance expenses-$1000
2) Office Supplies-$400
3) Web design as needed $2000- (programmer charges at $65/Hour)
4) Membership needs to be determined
We plan to refresh and update the entire website with Committee member Chet offering to do a lot of the intricate work. Thanks Chet.
Sent Emails:
1) Sent reminder notices to expired Members with a small positive result. I believe our Membership has dropped because we do not have the Bb program anymore. People have said our program was much easier than the current HDOA program.
2) Sent B.bassiana application and workshop notices (3).
3) Sent June-“The Independent Voice”.
Posted all on Face Book too. Other Tech work done as needed.
OT- The Buy Direct from Farmer link works because I have personally gotten 2 orders this month referring to finding us on the KCFA site.
Sincerely,
Cecelia Smith
