Mary Lou Moss reported for the events committee and thanked all the volunteers that helped out and made the coffee festival and the annual banquet a success for KCFA. KCFA made a very good profit from the banquet, and the sale of the new calendar girls Christmas cards. Mary Lou also presented to the membership all the new KCFA items for sale and available for purchase on the KCFA website.
Colehour Bondera said the education committee will not be scheduling any new events before the end of the year as we are still heavy in the coffee season.
Lisa Corker presented for the social committee a Feb 14 Valentines Day Cruise on the Body Glove. Please email [email protected] for information and interest. Price will be approx. $50pp which includes heavy pupus, live music by Grammy nominated LT Smooth with full service bar.
Cea reported, Web: Did what needed to be done. Trying to keep it interesting with various updates. Posted Dinner/Auction items and updated as needed. Answered web queries, gave out passwords/usernames, sent General Membership notes etc. as asked. New T-shirts are on site with images.
PR: Sent out information. Did all printing for Dinner/Auction on new laser printer. Printed various Gift Certificates for Dinner/Auction, printed Dinner Programs and printed Display pages for Acrylic Stands for Dinner/Auction. Saved money that was spent at Copy Post Plus last year. Look better with our new printer.
Ran 2 week straight ad in WHT during Kona Coffee Cultural Fest saying: Know Your Kona Coffee farmer- Buy Direct 100% Kona- Get Fresher Coffee @ Better prices- www.KonaCoffeeFarmers.org Total of $76 for 14 days. Will run it one week (or maybe 2?) during first week of December. People BUY the most coffee at this time of year and we wanted to catch Cultural Festival goers.
Running a GOOGLE for one month (small ad $50/month) with the same message.
Burlap Bag Update: Bags will be produced this month and ship out on the next container ETA to Hawaii will most likely be sometime in late February, as the sail time from India to CA s about 45-60 days.
Cea also proposed a motion to thank our local Vet, Dr. Ota, for allowing use of his picture in WHT add and to give him a free 1 year membership in KCFA. Motion approved by the board.
Bruce Corker reports on the Legislative committee:—In the past month the Committee has continued discussions with State House and Senate members on truth-in-labeling and strategies for the upcoming legislative session.
2—Despite requests for updates and information, there has been no communication from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture in over a month concerning KCFA’s compliant that Hawaii Coffee Company’s “Gourmet Hawaiian Coffee” packages appear to violate state law. On November 17, 2009, Rep. Denny Coffman sent a letter to HDOA requesting that the Department advise him and the KCFA of the HDOA’s determination on the label complaint.
3—“Kona Mocha”—Thanks to KCFA member Harold Hoogasian we have learned that See’s Candies “Kona Mocha” buttercream candy is not flavored with Kona coffee. Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. owns See’s Candies. We are preparing a letter to Mr. Buffett expressing our concern—similar to the concern of Rolex that the “Rolex” name not be used on non-Rolex watches and of Napa Valley growers that bottles with the “Napa Valley” name not contain wine from Central Valley grapes—and requesting a change to include Kona coffee in the ingredients.
Joanie reports for the membership/estates committee - Membership to date is 224 voting members with 202 actual farms. 22 spouses make up the difference, 13 supporting members and 49 associates. Nothing with estates to date.
Nancy Griffith reports on the Camber of Commerce that their Pau Hana meetings, the Social meetings, are on Weds. We have a representative to attend,_____________________________.
Cindy Whitehawk reported on the Hawaii Homegrown Food Network and found it to be very beneficial to all agriculture. It is free for KCFA to have a representative; they have an online newsletter just Google Hawaii homegrown food network. Motion was raised to become a supporting member of HHFN and seconded. Board approved motion.
Mary Lou Moss is still negotiating a discount contract with FedEx for KCFA members. Email will go out upon completion.
Expo to be held in Jan and information will be emailed to membership.
If you want your label to be on an artistic collage email Kathy Wood.
Nancy Griffith has formed a Kona Coffee Cooperative Corp. NOT a non-profit. They are applying for a planning grant. Letter of support need and a motion was made to send a letter of support for Nancy, passed by Board.
Respectfully submitted, Mary Lake, Secretary
