Geographic Identities- C.Bondera
The recent efforts of the Geographical Identity Committee are as follows:
Meeting of the American Origin Products Association (AOPA) on October 13, 2012 in Fayetteville, Arkansas was a great success. Bruce Corker, in the role of President of the Board of Directors of the group, and Colehour Bondera as a Board of Directors member were both present at the meeting. The attendance was significant, with presentations received by Christophe Malvezin of the Agricultural Counselor of the French Embassy, Sam Heitner of the Bureau of Champagne, and Katsuhiro Saka of the Agricultural Counselor of the Embassy of Japan.
Along with these presentations/discussions, there was a panel discussion by four faculty members of the University of Arkansas who all expressed academic/research/professional interest and support for products of geographical origin in the United States…
After the public meeting, AOPA held a member meeting which was attended by twelve individuals. The founding BOD voted for an initial elected BOD of nine (9) members. The groups is growing and new members represent a diversity of geography including Maine lobsters, New Mexico chilies, Ginseng, Vermont maple syrup among others.
Bruce supplemented Colehour's report by noting that the following origin producer groups sent representatives to the Fayetteville meeting: Idaho Potato Commission, Intertribal Agriculture Council, Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, Kona Coffee Farmers Association, Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, Napa Valley Vintners Association, and Maine Lobstermen's Association. The following producer groups have joined the AOPA, but were not able to send representatives to the meeting: American Shrimp Processors Association, California Dried Plum Board, Georgia Peach Council, New Mexico Native Chiles, and Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association.
NEW BUSINESS
M. Moss stated that the KCFA annual Meeting would be held on Jan. 12,2013 at the Kahalu Pavilion.
Pres. Smith encouraged all board members to review the KCFA Bylaws before the next board meeting in Nov. and make suggestions of what needs to be changed and how. KCFA Bylaws may only be changed at the Annual Meeting by the vote of the general membership.

Fundraising/Social Events – M. Moss
The Cultural Festival is fast approaching and I need several volunteers for the events that KCFA participates in. The biggest days are Saturday, Nov. 3 - Coffee & Art Stroll in Holualoa and Saturday, Nov. 10 - Heritage Day at the Old Airport. The Cupping Contest will be held at the Sheraton Hotel this year and KCFA will have a table to sell our logo merchandise and coffee.
I need several farmers to donate 5 lbs of green coffee so I can roast it up and sell it at the Festival. This is a wonderful way that farmers can contribute to KCFA at a wholesale price and KCFA can reap the benefits of retail price.
The Social Committee has suggested that the Annual General Meeting be held at a different date and location than Expo. Suggestions for a different location is Kahalu'u covered area, Old Airport covered area and possibly 2-step. Possible alternative dates are Jan. 12 or 19, 2013. Hopefully a date and location will be assigned by the Oct. KCFA meeting.

The groups is growing and new members represent a diversity of geography including Maine lobsters, New Mexico chiles, Ginseng, Vermont maple syrup among others.
That said, Kona coffee will continue to work with those we have been working with, and now other groups who represent the broad diversity of geographically defined products which protect the producers of such a range of products around the country (and of course the world).
Colehour Bondera will represent Kona coffee at the Slow Food Terra Madre gathering in Turin, Italy from October 25-29, 2012.
