Aloha Coffee Farmers,
You may have seen in the news this week that Kona is currently the only district in the state not experiencing drought conditions. We can be grateful for that. NOAA’s latest forecast suggests we may enter a neutral or slight La Niña pattern this fall. If so, we could see drier and slightly warmer weather heading into winter—conditions that may help suppress coffee leaf rust during the harvest season.
Due to travel schedules, several Board members were away in August, and we chose to cancel that month’s meeting. Our next Board meeting is scheduled for September 17 at the Extension Office in Kainaliu. If you’ve never attended one, we warmly invite you to join us. Your presence and input are always welcome.
Meanwhile, our Events Committee was active at the recent Kokua Kailua Village Stroll, sharing information about Kona coffee and the broader coffee industry in Hawai‘i. It’s always rewarding to connect with the community and educate others about the value and integrity of our work.
I want to take a moment to sincerely thank you for being a valued member of the Kona Coffee Farmers Association (KCFA). Whether you’re a farmer, processor, roaster, or retailer, your commitment is essential to sustaining the authenticity and excellence of Kona coffee. Together, we uphold a legacy that’s deeply rooted in quality, tradition, and community.

Five Years On, Where Does the Industry Stand on Infused Coffee?

“Between 2018 and 2020, rumours began to circulate about a new “infusion” processing method.
The process involved co-fermenting green coffee with additional natural ingredients, such as fruit and spices. Producers could then create intensely bold and prominent flavour profiles, corresponding to whichever ingredients they added.
As a result, producers could “customise” their coffees to match buyer preferences, broadening market access. Moreover, infusion processing methods could also raise cup scores by a few points, potentially improving farmers’ income.
The benefits were clear, especially in an industry that advocates for producers’ economic and social empowerment. Yet, some coffee professionals are still hesitant to accept them….”
Potassium: A Silent Partner in Kona Coffee Quality
The Role of Potassium in Coffee Flowering, Cherry Set, and Cup Quality
Potassium (K) is thought of as the “quality nutrient” in coffee production. Unlike nitrogen, which drives vegetative growth, potassium plays a pivotal role in the flowering and maturation phases of the coffee tree. Its influence spans three critical stages:
Flowering: Potassium regulates water movement and enzyme activation, which are
essential for flower initiation and development. Adequate potassium ensures
synchronized and vigorous flowering, setting the stage for uniform cherry development
(1).
Cherry Set and Expansion: During fruit formation, potassium facilitates carbohydrate
transport from leaves to developing cherries. This nutrient is vital for cell expansion,
sugar accumulation, and overall cherry weight (1). Deficiencies during this stage can
lead to poor fruit set, smaller beans, and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases.
Cup Quality: Potassium enhances sugar-to-starch conversion and influences the
concentration of flavor precursors such as chlorogenic acids and amino acids (2). These
compounds are critical during roasting, where they transform into the aromatic and
flavor-rich compounds that define Kona coffee’s signature profile.

The Undervaluation of Shade-Grown Coffee

A study by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) has found that carbon markets undervalue shade-grown coffee farms. The research, published in Communications Earth & Environment, analyzed 67 studies from around the world’s coffee regions. The findings revealed that coffee farms currently store about 482 million metric tons of carbon in aboveground biomass. However, if all shade-grown farms were converted to sun-grown monocultures, the resulting tree loss could release 174-221 million metric tons of carbon, far outweighing the estimated 82-87 million metric tons that could be gained through global tree-planting initiatives on sun farms. This imbalance points to a troubling incentive problem: carbon credit systems often reward planting new trees but not protecting existing ones. Farmers may be pushed toward replacing older, carbon-dense trees with younger species that store far less carbon. The study also highlights biodiversity risks, as shade-grown farms with diverse native tree canopies support roughly four times more bird species than monoculture systems. The researchers argue that carbon payment frameworks must shift to reward conservation of mature shade trees, not just new plantings.

Study: Farm Level Bacterial Communities Affect Coffee Flavor

“A recent study led by a team affiliated with the Smithsonian Bird Friendly coffee program suggests the bacterial community surrounding coffee plants may have a pronounced effect on coffee flavor.
Published in June in Scientific Reports, the study also establishes a relationship between types of crop management systems — namely full sun or shade coffee — and the bacterial communities on coffee cherries and in the soil.
“Overall, what drives improved coffee flavor is relatively unknown, with likely many complex factors being involved,” the authors wrote. “However, evidence from our study suggests that the bacterial community in the soil and cherries may play a role in coffee quality outcomes.”
The study involved 320 soil samples and 320 cherry samples of coffees from 22 farms with different management systems near Cundinamarca, Colombia. The coffees — all Castillo-variety arabica — were identified as having specialty-grade flavor characteristics or not….”

But while your morning brew might feel harmless, it can interact with certain medicines in ways that reduce their effectiveness — or increase the risk of side effects.
From common cold tablets to antidepressants, caffeine’s impact on the body goes far beyond a quick energy boost. Tea also contains caffeine but not in the same concentrations as coffee, and doesn’t seem to affect people in the same way. Here’s what you should know about how coffee can interfere with your medications — and how to stay safe.
1. Cold and flu medicines
Caffeine is a stimulant, which means it speeds up the central nervous system. Pseudoephedrine, a decongestant found in cold and flu remedies such as Sudafed, is also a stimulant. When taken together, the effects can be amplified — potentially leading to jitters or restlessness, headaches, fast heart rate and insomnia….
2. Thyroid medication
Levothyroxine, the standard treatment for an underactive thyroid, is highly sensitive to timing — and your morning coffee can get in the way. Studies show that drinking coffee too soon after taking levothyroxine can reduce its absorption by up to 50%….”
Study Confirms Caffeine Keeps the Brain Buzzing During Sleep

“… Brain Stimulation During Sleep
On nights when participants consumed caffeine before bed, their brain signals were more variable and unpredictable, particularly during non-REM (NREM) sleep, which is critical for memory and cognitive recovery. Compared to a placebo, caffeine reduced the presence of slower brainwaves like theta and alpha — which are normally associated with deep sleep — and boosted beta waves, which are linked to wakefulness.
Notably, the changes in brain activity were more prominent in younger participants (ages 20-27) than in middle-aged adults (ages 41-58). The researchers suspect this is because younger people have more adenosine receptors in the brain — the targets that caffeine blocks to produce its stimulant effect.
This study adds to growing evidence that caffeine can significantly alter the brain’s nighttime rhythms — even at moderate doses and even in people who regularly consume it…”

US Coffee Buyers Request Postponement of Brazil Imports
Following the 50% U.S. tariff implementation on Brazilian goods, U.S. green coffee buyers have begun requesting to postpone Brazilian coffee imports as they hold out for further tariff negotiations, according to a Reuters report.
“They have inventory for 30 to 60 days, which gives them some breathing room to wait a little longer for ongoing negotiations,” said Cecafe President Marcio Ferreira.

Recipe: Coffee Macadamia Nut Cookies
Ingredients
1 cup butter
3 ½ cups flour
1 ¾ cups brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
½ tsp salt
½ cup strong Kona coffee
1 cup chocolate chips
½ tsp cinnamon
1 cup chopped macadamia nuts
Cream butter, sugar, eggs, and coffee until fluffy. Sift flour, baking soda, salt and
cinnamon, and add to mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Chill dough well for at
least 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400° F. Drop dough by rounded spoonfuls onto greased (or parchment)
baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until edges are light brown. Cool and eat
.
