KCFA’s Coffee Talk will be held this Thursday, February 18, from 3 – 4:30 pm at CTAHR (mauka of the Manago Hotel) in Kainaliu.
Come and “Talk Story” with Jeri Hall and Ashley Obrey, the new Land Asset Managers for Kamehameha Schools (KS) in South Kona. Hall and Obrey would like to introduce themselves to the Kona coffee farming community, learn more about what the KCFA does and meet its farmers.
As some South Kona growers have already received lease renewal letters, this is a good time to ask general questions in a casual and friendly environment.
Over the last few years, many rumors have swirled around the “new leases” that will be rolling out in South Kona. The good news is that the leases are now available for review through KS and the bulk of the rumors were incorrect or greatly overstated. However, the new leases do contain much more specific language on how KS expects growers to factor their percentage rent, deal with non-permitted structures, maintain basic insurance requirements (including liability and crop), and how growers who contract out their harvest to farm managers must document their activities. There are also provisions on how Assignment of leases (selling your farm) will be done and what costs will be assessed.
Whether you are a cherry farmer, or a vertically-integrated estate, these changes to the lease require us as growers to be aware and make the necessary adjustments. Ms. Hall has asked that people with specific questions be encouraged to make an appointment and come into the office to discuss them with her. (TEL: 322-5324 or jehall@ksbe.edu)
In recognition of the potential questions and issues that will likely arise as this process moves forward, the KCFA is forming a Leasehold Committee to assist growers. If you are interested in joining this committee, please email info@konacoffeefarmers.org
Free to KCFA Members and $10 for others, which may be applied to a KCFA annual Membership of $25. Come early to sign in.
